AutoFillTM

Automatic Container Irrigation System

AutoFill automatic container irrigation delivers the convenience of automatic irrigation, but with the advantages of sub-irrigation. Each reservoir is controlled by its own patented float valve, which adjusts the water level to allow aeration in the soil, prevents irrigation overflow and evaporation. The reservoir is connected to a low-pressure water line or gravity-fed reservoir, and needs no timers, valves, or electricity.

See a detailed animation of the AutoFill system

  • Each pot or planter has its own valve, and adjusts the moisture levels independently of other pots on the same line.
  • No central timer or valve system required-may be used with gravity or pump-driven systems. Requires no wires or electricity.
  • Ultimate water efficiency-little evaporation loss, no irrigation water overflow, drainage control
  • Healthier plants through consistent, horticulturally sound watering practices.
  • Easy design, installation, & system maintenance

How the AutoFill Works

See a detailed animation of the AutoFill system

The AutoFill Valve -
AutoFill ReservoirAwarded the Australian Design Awards "Design Mark for Engineering Design", the AutoFill valve maintains the correct water level in the reservoir through a unique, patented float system.

AutoFill ValveUnlike most float valves, which keep water at a consistent level, the AutoFill valve opens when water reaches a low point (shown dark blue), and stops when it reaches a maximum point (shown light blue). This allows for proper dry-down of the soil, and optimal plant health.

The Autofill valve opens, filling the reservoir. As reservoir fills, water begins to wick up into soil. AutoFill valve closes when reservoir is full. Plants draw water from soil, which begins depleting reservoir. As level of water in reservoir drops, soil begins to dry and aeration is allowed through the larger fill ports. AutoFill valve reopens once level of reservoir drops to refill level.

System Design Guide

AutoFill systems are designed to run on a live, 20 psi water line. Most designs will incorporate an isolation valve, a filter, and pressure regulator at the head of the line (as shown in the diagram below). The AutoFill valves function even at very low pressure, so they may be used with gravity-fed water systems as well as conventional lines. Smaller pots will typically take one reservoir unit per system. Longer and larger planters will take multiple reservoirs, which can be connected off one 1/4" feeder line. The typical flow through the AutoFill valve at 20psi, when open, is 10 gal/hr.

To control drainage from the pot or planter, the drain hole needs to be elevated 3-5" off the bottom of the pot or planter. This can be accomplished by drilling drain holes in the side of the planter, or using the included overflow drainage adapter and adhesive. For critical applications, it is still recommend that a saucer be used to catch any weepage that may occur.

AutoFillTM Accessories

  • Pressure regulator for AutoFill systems (AF-REG) - 3/4" pressure regulator for system installation. Adjustable between 10-30 psi, preset for correct system pressure. Available with 3/4" FNPT on either end.
  • AF-LBRHanging basket reservoirs -. To tackle the problem of hanging baskets where a water line isn't available, we've created a reservoir to be planted with the AutoFill units. It is filled with a hook from the ground. They are available in two sizes, one for small baskets (AF-SBR, up to 18"dia.), and one for larger baskets (AF-LBR). Both are independent of the AutoFill reservoir, and would typically be used with an AF-900 watering AF-HB10system.

  • Small hanging baskets - the AF-HB10 is a complete hanging basket, integrating the AF-900 AutoFill system. Available in Black and Hunter Green, these are simple to use, hang, and water. 10"dia. x 10"h. Hanging wire is included.

AF-HB20

  • Large hanging baskets - the AF-HB20 is a hanging bowl 24"dia. x 10"h. This can be paired up with the AF-900 (not included) and AF-LBR to create a complete systsem. The AF-HB20 includes hanging wire. The AF-HB20 is available in Black, Hunter Green and Terra Cotta colors. Others available as special order.
