California St. (Bank of America Building) Plaza, San Francisco, CA
Designer: KenKay Landscape Architects
This high-profile plaza in front of downtown San Francisco's tallest
building needed a facelift, but the work had to be done quickly at night
in order not to disrupt business. The designer came up with a unique planter
design that mirrored an important stylistic element of the facade, the
triangle. The planters were to be of granite, and needed to be easy to
install yet permanent. The solution was a tube steel frame with granite
panels hung from each side, assembled on site. A custom polyethylene planter
liner by Planter Technology set within the frame holds the plants &
soil. The liners were installed with connections for drainage, irrigation,
and in some places, electricity. Planter Technology also provided planter
liners, garbage can liners & lids, ash/trash lids and concrete planter
liners for the custom designed wood bench/planter combinations (see bottom
picture below). Careful coordination with all fabricators played a large
role in this project. Our product is barely seen, but key to making the
whole thing work!
